Why Arclight

An engineer who flies.

Arclight Skyworks was built on a simple conviction: that a deliverable should carry interpretation, not just imagery. An orthomosaic is a starting point. A thermal scan is evidence, not a conclusion. The work is in knowing the difference.

01

Engineering Judgment

Owned and operated by a licensed Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with thirty years in civil, mechanical, and ocean engineering.

02

Purpose-Built Fleet

Five aircraft across two mission profiles. Onboard thermal imaging and LiDAR obstacle sensing for close-in inspection around wires, conductors, and lattice steel.

03

Veteran-Owned

Twenty years of Navy service behind every deployment — Civil Engineer Corps, Deep Sea Diver. Briefed, planned, and executed to standard.

01

Thermal Inspection

Radiometric thermal imaging detects temperature gradients invisible to the naked eye — moisture intrusion, delamination, failed cells, and thermal bridging.

Used on bridges, solar arrays, and data center envelopes to inspect critical infrastructure without scaffolding, lifts, or a shutdown window.

02

Structural & Visual Inspection

High-resolution, close-range imaging of structures that are difficult, costly, or dangerous to inspect any other way.

Obstacle sensing detects cable as fine as twelve millimetres in diameter at flight speed — purpose-built for the guy wires, power conductors, coaxial lines, fiber optic cables, and lattice steel that make tower and bridge environments unforgiving.

03

Orthomosaic Mapping

Georeferenced 2D orthomosaics, dense point clouds, digital surface models (DSM), and digital terrain models (DTM) for land development, construction, and site planning.

Processed through PIX4Dmatic and PIX4Dcloud. Documented ground control points and reported checkpoint residuals — a verifiable accuracy chain, not just imagery from above. Digital Elevation Models (DEM) encompass both — DSM for surface features, DTM for bare earth terrain.

04

Construction Progress Documentation

Recurring capture on a fixed cadence, flown to the same flight plan every visit.

Comparable imagery month over month for owners, lenders, and project teams who need to see change rather than a snapshot.

05

Reality Capture & 3D Modeling

Photorealistic Gaussian Splatting reconstructions, 3D textured meshes, and CAD-ready optimised models from aerial and close-range capture.

Processed through PIX4Dcloud and refined in Blender and SolidWorks. Deliverables a client can navigate, share, and open in a CAD environment — not just a cloud link.

About

An Engineer Who Flies.

Arclight Skyworks was built on a simple conviction: that a deliverable should carry interpretation, not just imagery.

Kenneth Wydajewski is a licensed Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia and a twenty-year Navy veteran — Civil Engineer Corps, deep sea diver — with thirty years of practice across civil, mechanical, and ocean engineering. Arclight Skyworks applies that engineering judgment to aerial inspection and mapping for clients across Northern Virginia.

Our purpose

Why.

Most companies explain what they do and how they do it. We would rather start with why. Here is ours.

01 Incubation

It started with Top Gun

The RC aircraft came before the film did — balsa frames, monocote film, NiCad batteries, Futaba AM radios, gas motors launched from a field. Top Gun put a name to the orientation that was already there: toward flight, toward machines that move through space, toward the question of what they can see from there.

University and ROTC followed. A USN commission and a pilot slot were the plan. In the final year of officer training, a flight physical showed vision fell short of the standard. Not a crisist. A redirect.

A commission earned. Twenty years of Navy service in the Civil Engineer Corps — terrestrial construction, subsea visual survey, underwater infrastructure, remote and autonomous undersea vehicles. Work that demands the same discipline as any aerial mission: plan, assess, execute, document. The standard does not change. Only the environment does. A PE license earned in the field. A lifelong compulsion to explore how things work — to see, understand, and connect the mechanism to the world around it.

The question never changed. Only the domain did.

02 Saturation

A family shaped by engineering and flight

Clarity arrived from two directions at once.

Through phone calls and photographs, following a son — a civil engineer, like his father and his sister — earn his naval aviator Gold Wings flying flying helicopters, confirmed something already suspected: that the discipline of flight and the discipline of engineering are the same thing applied expressed through different disciplines.

And observing a daughter, a civil and structural engineer, apply unmanned aerial systems to field investigation work made the professional case. The aircraft is a sensing platform. The value is not in the imagery — it is in the interpretation. An engineer who can fly closes a gap that imagery alone can not.

03 Illumination

A decision made on a deck

On a maritime project in 2025, asked by a sUAS Pilot to serve as a visual observer, the controls were handed over. The decision was made on land.

That was the moment. Not a plan forming — a decision already made.

An Air 3S arrived within weeks. One family. Manned and unmanned rotary across three careers. The orientation that started in a field with a gas motor had finally found its professional form.

The FAA Part 107 examination followed. Arclight Skyworks, LLC was launched.

Closing the gap between capturing data and interpreting it. That is where the engineer and the pilot are the same person.

Arclight Skyworks exists because infrastructure deserves to be inspected more carefully and more frequently.

What we bring is thirty years of engineering practice, twenty years of military field operations, and the conviction that a deliverable should carry interpretation, not just imagery. An orthomosaic is a starting point. A thermal scan is evidence, not a conclusion. The work is in knowing the difference.

We will earn the rest.
